Association Activity : Our former body, the then Auto-Body Industries Union, was ordered to dissolve by the Organization Restriction Regulations in 1948 after the WWII. Then, we were reborn as an Auto-Body Industries Association.
After going through a number of changes, we were renamed to JapanAuto-Body Industries Association (JABIA) in 1953, and in 1958 its registration system was changed from a regional association registration to an individual registration. In 1970, it was reorganized as an incorporated association under an approval of Trade and Industry Department.
Meanwhile, nine branches were established nationwide starting with the Kanto Branch in 1991 aiming to further revitalize our activities.
More Information
Activities of our branches are aimed to deal with issues unique to their respective regions and are performed in a mutually complementary relationship with the Head Office as if they were wheels of a vehicle.
In February 1954, we held a competition for a design of our Membership mark.
We entrusted Mr. Takeo Terada, a member of Association of Artists, or Nikakai, witha judgment and out of twenty three entries he selected the design shown left, a tire with a feather arranged, for our membership badge.
Being comprised of president, executive directors and member staff, our Head Office is in charge of overall administration of whole JABIA.
Among chief responsibilities of the head office are to promote activity plans in accordance with the decisions made at an ordinary meeting and also to deal with relevant governmental bodies such as Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. (JAMA) is a nonprofit industry association currently comprised of fourteen manufacturers of passenger cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles in Japan. Its organization today is the result of the merger of the Japan Motor Industrial Federation (JMIF) and the Japan Automobile Industry Employers Association (JAIEA) with JAMA in May, 2002.
Automobile manufacturing integrates many supporting industries, and automobile use is the focus of a wide range of related industries. Directly or indirectly, close to 10% of Japan’s working population is involved in auto industry-related work. Auto production furthermore accounts for 16% of the total value of Japan’s manufacturing shipments and for roughly 30% of the value of the machinery industries, combined shipments. The automotive industry is thus one of the Japanese economy’s core industrial sectors. The globalization of auto manufacturing also contributes significantly to local and national economies around the world.

The Japanese rolling stock industries
The Japanese rolling stock industries had contributed to modernization of the industries for nearly a hundred years since 1872 when the railway was firstly introduced in Japan. Recently, transportation has been multiplied in mode. However, the railway in Japan has still occupied a significant portion of transportation market, especially in passenger, among all modes including road, air and water transportation. Nowadays, a necessity to develop railways again is globally recognized with a current movement to re-evaluate its features as environmentally friendly transportation. The Japanese rolling stock industries, manufacturing and supplying rolling stock such as Shinkansen ( high speed ) trains , commuters, metro cars, locomotives, freight cars and LRT vehicles to the railway operators, are expected to play an important role in the new development of railways.
With the background above mentioned, it is defined that the mission of JARI is to enhance the development of Japanese rolling stock industries and to support the rail way operation industries, and, thereby, to advance the public interests.

The Society of Automotive Engineers of Japan (JSAE) was founded on February 1, 1947. Its aims, as stipulated in Article 4, are to “promote scientific culture, expand the industrial economy, and improve the quality of people’s lives by furthering the development of automobile science and technology.”
In June 1947, JSAE was sanctioned as a corporation by the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of International Trade & Industry and the Ministry of Transport. In 1981, it became a member of the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies and was registered with the Science Council of Japan as an academic society three years later.
When JSAE was first established, its members numbered only 1,500. Today, with the growth of Japan’s automobile industry, membership has swelled to over 40,000 members and JSAE is recognized as a leading scientific society in Japan.
The organization comprises a number of committees under the Boards of Technology, Publishing, Standards, Education and Planning and all. Members of each committee voluntarily participate in a range of activities in order to exchange information on automotive technologies and to pursue innovation.
Association Activity :
Investigation and Research:
The Technology Board establishes committees composed of high level engineers who work to achieve solutions by carrying out investigations and research and by promoting activities geared toward the integration of automobile technologies. The results are widely disseminated throughout membership by means of symposia and reports.
Symposia and Annual Congress:
Symposia: JSAE symposia are held 8 to 10 times a year and present the most up-to-date infomation in automotive technology and the other related fields.Annual Congress: JSAE holds two congresses annually, one in the spring and one in the autumn. The spring congress takes place in the Tokyo area, while 5 local branches take turns to host the autumn congress. At these conventions, the latest research results on automobile and other related technologies are presented. The spring congress also offers presentations in English.
The Automotive Engineering Exhibition:
The Automotive Engineering Exhibition: The Automotive Engineering Exhibition takes place annually at the spring convention. It is the only exhibition of its kind in Japan, providing a large-scale international forum where engineers and exhibitors at the cutting edge of automotive technologies can exchange information.
Publications:
Under the publication board, JSAE publishes all kinds of material related to the automotive technology and knowledge that have been accumulated over the years. They include research/test results presented at the conventions and symposiums. All publications are now in Japanese with the exception of the English journal, JSAE Review. But JSAE intends to be more open to the world.
Standardization:
The Standardization Board establishes and revises automobile standards (JASO), prepares draft JIS standards, and discusses the drawing up of international standards. Standards are classified into four levels: in-house, associate (e.g. JASO), national (e.g. JIS), and international (e.g. ISO). These four levels form a pyramid, as shown in the diagram. Moving from in-house standards at the base up through the various levels to international standards at the top, the standards are progressively to take on the common elements. The content of the standards corresponds to regional aims at each level, while the 1995 WTO/TBT Agreement calls for a harmonized consistency, using the international standards as a basis of the national and associate standards.

Association Activity : JNX, Japanese automotive Network eXchange, is a standard network for automotive industry in Japan, and to be launched in October 2000.
Benefit of JNX
Usually, automotive suppliers were required to have dedicated communication lines and terminals for each automobile manufacturer or business activity to have business with them, which made suppliers network very complicated and costly. JNX utilize a standard communication technology used by the Internet. This will help parts suppliers to connect and communicate with all automobile manufacturers with a single link and a single protocol. It will reduce communication and operation costs. JNX is designed as a reliable, secured, and high performance infrastructure for supply chain management, which will improve the information flow, and reduce the time to the market.
Features of JNX
- To establish a standard communication network, JNX has standardized legacy communication protocols into single communication protocol (TCP/IP) to build an open industrial extranet.
- High performance, reliable, and secured service is provided by Certified Service Providers. Those service levels is always monitored and managed by JNX oversees.
