IHI Corporation Japan

IHI Corporation is a Japanese company formerly known as Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. It was founded in 5 December 1853. Its headquarter is situated in Tokyo, Japan. The key people of the company are Kazuaki Kama (Chairman) and Tamotsu Saito (President and CEO). The company produces ships, aircraft engines, turbochargers for automobiles, industrial machines, power station boilers and other facilities, suspension bridges and other transport-related machinery.

IHI turbochargers are produced by Ishikawajima-Harima, commonly used in passenger automobiles. Boeing and General Electric Aviation have subcontracted parts of many models of jet aircraft out to IHI, as well as Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, and Fuji Heavy Industries.

History

1853s – 1959s :

In 1853, Ishikawajima Shipyard established. In 1889, Ishikawajima Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd. is established. In 1929, the automobile section spins off and Ishikawajima Automotive Works Co., Ltd. is established (becomes Isuzu Motors Limited later on through a series of mergers). Harima Dock Co., Ltd. renamed to Harima Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd. In 1959, ISHIBRAS established.

1960s – 1979s :

In 1960, Ishikawajima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. and Harima Shipbuilding & Engineering Co., Ltd. merge to establish Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (IHI). In 1964 Yokohama No.1 Works (currently Yokohama Machinery Works) established as a heavy machinery plant. Merges with Nagoya Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. and Nagoya Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. Yokohama No.2 Works (currently IHI Marine United Yokohama Shipyard) established as a shipbuilding plant (operation on the first ship starts on October 22).

1980s – 1999s :

In 1981, Japanese Aero Engines Corporation established (jointly by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd.). In 1995, Marine United established jointly with Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. However, in 1998, Construction of Soma Aero-Engine Plant as a jet engine parts plant completed.

2000s – Present :

In 2000, purchased Nissan Motor’s Aerospace and Defense Divisions and established IHI Aerospace Co., Ltd. Also, in 2006, Head Office shifted to Toyosu, Koto-ku, Tokyo (Toyosu IHI Building). In 2007, the company name changed from “Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd” to “IHI Corporation”. Also, in 2013, established Japan Marine United Corporation, merging its ship building unit, Marine United Inc., with Universal Shipbuilding Corp. of JFE Holdings after conversation started in April 2008.
