Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd. is a Japanese company. The company’s headquarter is situated in Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, Japan. The company was founded in November 20, 1888 and was incorporated in November 1, 1934. The key people of the company Shunsuke Betsukawa is the president of the company. The company’s aim to become a machinery manufacturer that continues to provide excellent products and services to the world. History

Sumitomo started its operations in the fields of copper refining, trading, and mining known initially as Izumi-ya. Its Shikoku Besshi Copper Mine first opened in 1691, and by 1888, mining operations had extended enough to warrant the introduction of the “shop practices” concept as a way of manufacturing and repairing equipment and tools used at the mine. This marked the opening of Sumitomo.

In 1969, the company joined forces with Uraga Heavy Industries, Ltd., a company first launched as Uraga Dock Co., Ltd. in 1897 with the advocacy of Takeaki Enomoto. After the merger, the company, now operating under the name of Sumitomo, opened up two large-scale plants, the Oppama Shipyard (currently known as the Yokosuka Works) and Toyo Works, establishing its foundations as a heavy industries company.

1888s – 1950s :

On November 20, 1888, The company is launched as a machinery production and repair shop for the Besshi Copper Mine. On June 21, 1897, Incorporated as Uraga Dock Co., Ltd. In 1902, The company acquires Tokyo Ishikawajima Shipyards Co., Ltd.’s Uraga Works. On November 1, 1934, The company incorporated as Sumitomo Machinery Co., Ltd. In 1940, Named changed to Sumitomo Machinery Industries Co., Ltd. On May, 1949, Company stock jointly listed on the Tokyo and Osaka Stock Exchanges.

1950s – 1970s :

In 1952, The company renamed Sumitomo Machinery Industries Co., Ltd. In 1962, The company merges with Uraga Tamashima Diesel Co., Ltd. to form Uraga Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. Also, in 1966, Sumitomo Machinery Corporation of America (SMA) established. And Environmental Health Research Center opens in Hiratsuka. On June 1969, Sumitomo Machinery Industries Co., Ltd. and Uraga Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. merge to form Sumitomo.

1970s – 1990s :

In 1971, The company established Oppama Shipyard (currently known as Yokosuka Works) and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Envirotech Co., Ltd. On April 1980, Sumitomo Casting and Forging Co., Ltd. (currently famous as Sumitomo Heavy Industries Himatex Co, Ltd.) established. On October 1986, Sumitomo (SHI) Construction Machinery Co., Ltd. established.

1990s – Present :

On April 1993, The company established of a dedicated factory within the Tamashima Works (currently known as the Okayama works) site for the compact Cyclo Gear motor, Altax®. In May 1999, The company acquires Osaka Chain and Machinery, Ltd. (currently known as SEISA Gear, Ltd.). On October 2000, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Finetech, Ltd. established.

On April 2001, Sumitomo Construction Machinery Co., Ltd, divided into two companies: Sumitomo Construction Machinery Co., Ltd., which focuses on roadwork equipment and excavators, and Sumiju Construction Crane Co., Ltd., which focuses on the crane business . Also, on April 2013, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Material Handling Systems Co., Ltd., established by integrating Logistics & Parking System Division and Sumitomo Heavy Industries Engineering & Services Co., Ltd. On October 2015, Sumitomo Heavy Industries Material Handling Systems Co., Ltd. takes over the industrial crane business from Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Machinery Technology Corporation.
