How and when it begins?
In year, 1885 two German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach designed and built the very first fueled motorcycle and named it Daimler Reitwagen. Unlike, this vehicle was the safety bicycles or the boneshaker bicycles of that era,it had zero degrees of steering axis angle and no fork offset. It did not use the principles of bicycles and motorcycle dynamics developed nearly 70 years earlier. Instead of that it was relied on two outrigger wheels to remain upright while turning.
Later Experimentations:
Edward Butler of England done his experiment as a result he designed the first commercial self-propelled cycle which was a three-wheel design and named it Butler Petrol Cycle. This plan of Butler was exhibited at Stanley Cycle Show in london in 1884, and it was approved and built by the Merryweather fire Engine company in Greenwich, in year 1888.
The specification of this vehicle:
It was a three-wheeled vehicle with the rear wheel directly driven by a 5⁄8 hp (0.47 kW), 40 cc (2.4 cu in) displacement, 2 1⁄4 in × 5 in (57 mm × 127 mm) bore × stroke, it was equipped with rotary valves and a float-fed. Firstly it was started by compressed air, the engine was liquid-cooled,with a radiator over the rear driving wheel. Throttle valve lever were used to control the speed and there was no braking speed was fitted, the vehicle was stopped by raising and lowering driving wheel using foot-operated lever. The two small caster wheels was used to borne the weight of the machine and driver was seated between the front wheels. It was not a success unfortunately, Butler failed to find sufficient financial backing.
The credit of invention of world’s first motorcycle given to Daimler Reitwagen. Later many authorities excluded steam powered, electric motorcycles or diesel powered two-wheelers and given a new definition to a motorcycle, and it rises the rapid use of electric motorcycles worldwide.
Construction of a Motor Bike:
Construction of a motorcycle involves engineering, manufacturing, and assembling the components and systems which results in the performance, cost and theory of art desired by the designer. Modern motorcycles now has mass produced on a steel or aluminium frame, telescopic forks holding the front wheel, and disc brakes. Some of the parts, are designed for giving a special look or design or may be added for better performance reasons. Generally, a petrol powered engine consists of between one or four cylinders and rare, up to eight cylinders coupled to a manual five-or six-speed continuous transmission drives the swingarm mounted rear wheel by a chain, drive shaft or belt.

Types of Motorcycle:
Standard:
A Standard or also called a naked motorcycle is one such bike combining an upright riding position, handlebar and footpegs positioned for comfort, generally but sometimes without fairing or windscreen. They are versatile, general-purpose street motorcycles. Primarily they are identified by their upright riding position, and partway between the reclining rider posture bikes. Because of their flexibility, lower costs, and moderate engine output, standards are particularly suited to motorcycle beginners. Yamaha FZ-07, Honda CB500F, Triumph T100 Bonneville are examples of standard bikes.
Cruiser:
Cruiser are low seated bikes, with gas tank slightly above it, and foot controls are between mid and forward. The cruiser carriage can be recognized instantly. It doesn’t need apes, a rider should be little bit relaxed and should not be hunched forward to reach the bars and also there should be no clubmans or clip-ons or anything like that. Since from 1930 to the 1960s, cruiser are styled by Americans machines such as those made Harley-Davidson, Indian, and Excelsior-Henderson.
There is a large displacement V-twin engines are the norm. Other engine configuration and small to medium displacements also exist. The riding position placed between the feet forward and the hands are relatively high. That keep the spine erect and lean back slightly. Riding cruisers at moderate speed gives you comfortable ride rather than other styles. Harley-Davidson Street 750, Honda Shadow. Yamaha’s V Star 250 and Kawasaki Vulcan S 650 are couple of options for Cruiser bikes.
Sport Bikes:
Sport bikes represents high speeds and acceleration, efficient braking, and cornering abilities, compromising on comfort and fuel efficiency. They have high -performance engines on a lightweight frame. These motorcycle come with higher foot pegs that move the legs closer to the body and enables to reach the lower handle. That positions the body and weight forward and over the tank. They are equipped with higher horsepower and torque that makes the bike faster with instant acceleration to reach the top speed. KTM RC390, other models are the Kawasaki Ninja 250R and 300R. The Yamaha R3 and the Honda CRB300R are some examples of sports bike.
Dual Sports Bikes:
This bike segment is a small community. But its demand is increasing among youth as it share a dirt bike experience. These bikes are built for riding on and off road, and can explore riding experience in all kinds of terrain. These are equipped with street-legal equipment such as lights, speedometer, mirrors, horn, license plate mounting, and muffler and are light and nimble, relatively inexpensive and cheap to insure. Yamaha, Kawasaki and Suzuki all offer beginner-friendly dual-sport bikes. While more performance-focused brands such as KTM and Beta offer slightly modified versions of their off-road race bikes in street-legal trim.
Adventure Tourer:
This segment of motorbikes has marked its place significantly over past the recent years. These are dedicated to adventure touring with large fairings and ample luggage, sport touring models that incorporate sportbike design and performance, which offers both off-road capabilities and long ride comfort.
Kawasaki Versys 650, Yamaha Super Ténéré. BMW S 1000 XR or Suzuki V-Strom 1000 are some options for adventure loving riders.
Fuel economy:
The fuel economy varies greatly with engine displacement and riding style of motorbikes. The company quoted mileage, which is certified by the ARAI. But by following few steps you can improve the fuel efficiency of your bike:
- The biggest enemy of mileage is friction. By maintaining and keeping internals of the bike you can manage with this problem at great extend.
- Poor conditions of tyres can reduce your bike fuel efficiency so keep them in proper condition.
- Don’t try to break momentum it is the biggest enemy while trying to extract the maximum mileage. Always try to ride in proper gear and adjust the momentum according to the suitable condition while riding.
- Using the throttle aggressively results in usage of more fuel, so make sure you are using it properly and gently.
- The effort of the engine is directly proportional to the load it has to run. So don’t remove mudguards and body panels, and keep the extra heavy accessories such as leg guards to a minimum.
