Suzuki Escudo was first launched in the Japanese domestic market in July 1988. The title obtained from the “escudo“, the commercial section of Portugal before the approval of the Euro. North American Sidekick became available for the model year 1989 as a two-door convertible or hardtop. Fuel-injected 80 hp (60 kW) 1.6-liter, eight-valve, four-cylinder Suzuki G16 engine was available on the XJ and JLX. 1990 caused the deletion of the upscale JLX variant.
