Amazing cars of Japan, Toyota 86 vs Subaru BRZ: People might not have noticed this before that Toyota GT86, the Subaru BRZ, and Scion FR-S look akin and almost the same. The reality is the cars are actually the same from the beginning with certain changes in a few designs. So it is important to determine in such a case as to which car is suitable for buying.

When exterior and interior design is taken into consideration, the similarity in the exterior does not necessarily match with the interior. Even the engine compartment is not the same in both cars. Let us have a detailed discussion about both cars below.

The similarity in their exterior design does not necessarily follow in the interior or in the engine compartment but we will take a detailed look at both cars in this article.

The Exterior Factor

Toyota 86

Taking a look at both the cars and you may notice that everything is almost visually the same except front fascia. The Toyota 86 gives you a sportier look together with a honeycomb-style grille. It is also having angular fog lights and prominent daylights LED. The Subaru BRZ has a bland front end with a U- shaped grille and a black lip which is capable to hold the registration plate.

Subaru BRZ

The side indicators in the car are not evenly placed but differently placed but the central idea is the same.

Interior Glamour

Toyota 86

As far as the interior is taken into consideration, both the vehicles are having the latest and modern amenities. Both the models Subaru and Toyota make proper use of leather and other soft materials in the interior portion.

Both are replacing plastic in most places. Taking into consideration space, the 86 and BRZ are perfectly in alignment. They moreover have an ample amount of front row space. On the other side, the rear passenger seats are crammed together.

Subaru BRZ

The BRZ is one step ahead of the 86 when it comes to luxury cars. It offers luxurious seats with Alcantara inserts. Moreover, the Toyota 86 has fabric on its seats. The dashboard of the vehicles combined with the latest technologies. There is satellite radio, Bluetooth connectivity for music and calls, a rearview parking camera, and a comprehensive 8 speaker audio system.

Performance Dynamics

Both the models Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ are termed as classified cars. So it expected that both the models go really fast. The performance of the car is also similar but the BRZ has an advantage over Subaru 86 when the engine department is taken into consideration.

Beneath the hood of each car is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine that you can find in Porsche. The engine of the model connected to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission. This is able to produce 205 horsepower and 200 horsepower respectively. The power goes into the rear wheels which are balanced well though. This is all due to hard sports suspension.

Fuel Efficiency

Considering the fuel efficiency, The BRZ is way ahead in this sector. The BRZ in a manual phase has 21/29 mpg city/highway fuel economy ratings. On the other side, 86 is slightly behind with 21/28 mpg city/ highway ratings. Comparing the ratings, it is almost similar to the automatic models. The BRZ is way forward with 24/33 mpg city/highway ratings while the 86 has 24/32 city/highway ratings.

There is not much great difference but one must go for the Subaru Model because fuel economy is what you want.

Features & Technology

These cars generally have the same equipment looking at the model but the packaging is different. For example, Toyota models offer the TRD handling package as an alternative on the GT trim. However, this is only on examples equipped with a manual transmission. On the corollary, BRZ is something that offers almost the same features from that package as part of a limited edition. The trim level is available only with the manual only.

Both the vehicles have 7 in the infotainment screen as a standard. This comes together with a leather-wrapped tilt and telescope steering wheel. It also has LED headlights and a Torsen limited-slip differential. It has additional features as well such as heated seats, LED for lights and a rear wing. With the manual, you can get a short-throw gear shifter. On the other side, the automatic comes with paddle shifters.

Final Verdict

This can be a case that you are a Toyota brand loyal or a Subaru Loyale. In such a case, you should go for your favorite model. But looking logically, the Subaru BRZ is a better choice due to better fuel economy and the price as well.

Considering the reliability, style and the Toyota brand name you are looking for. In such a situation there is nothing good in the low sports range than the Toyota 86.
