Introduction:

Toyota GR Supra vs Ford Mustang Shelby GT350- Car Comparison

While we are looking for the information, it is pertinent to know that it is not just a mere comparison. It is like a tiff between the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350 and the Toyota GR Supra. It’s not less like a spat between big and small, displacement versus refinement, three pedals versus two paddle-shifters, old school versus new.

Toyota GR Supra

This fighting is going on for more than 50 years. Carroll Shelby’s first Mustang GT350 was first ever begun in 1965, constructed in a small industrial building. The model is by the time the first Toyota Supra hit the street in the late 1970s. Moreover, it is also a valuable classic when the fourth-gen Supra, with its 2JZ twin-turbo inline-six, started slaying Ferraris in 1993. Likewise, with the return of the Supra for 2020—though with more than a little help from BMW—these two legends thus are finally rolling off assembly lines concurrently.

The Matchup

Considering both the cars, you may find they have engines in front driving the rear wheels. Further, it is all about the extent of their mechanical likeness. Furthermore, just like its ancestor, the much larger and heavier Shelby is all V-8 thunder and selection of manual gear. Code-named Voodoo, its V-8’s 5.2 liters of double-overhead-cam greatness is well popular for its flat-plane crank and 8250 rpm redline. Moreover, it takes in air atmospherically, makes 526 hp, and sounds like a Japanese superbike.

Toyota GR Supra

A while back, Ford has dialed up the GT350’s chassis, in order to create a GT350R with a back seat.

Thus, to maximize grip, there is a recalibration of its standard magnetorheological dampers. Further, its front springs are 10 percent stiffer to lessen dive under braking. Moreover, its rear springs are now six-percent softer, and there’s a stiffer anti-roll bar than before.

Besides this, there is a replacement of Ultra-grippy Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires with the previous Pilot Super Sports. Moreover, the test car is also equipped with the optional Handling Package, which includes camber plates atop its front struts.

Speed and transmission:

Since it is in partnership with BMW, Toyota’s newest Supra is for the first time a two-seater. Further, it’s also a mechanical doppelganger for the equally fresh BMW Z4. Likewise its most desirable forbearer, the Supra is packing a boosted inline-six. However, this time there’s one turbocharger instead of two. Besides this, the rating of BMW’s 3.0-liter is at 335 horsepower, which makes this the most powerful unmodified Supra ever. It moreover offers an eight-speed automatic transmission.

On the Road

Considering the Toyota whose packing is 191 fewer ponies than the Shelby. Further, the Mustang who is wearing larger and stickier rubber, you might think that this would be a beat down. However while we dig a little deeper into the specs, and you may further see that the Supra weighs 446 pounds less than the 3821-pound Mustang. Moreover, its wheelbase is nearly 10 inches shorter. The Supra, which is about the size of a Porsche Cayman, is also more robust than Toyota is telling us. Or is it BMW?

Besides this, you may find a Supra to a chassis dyno where it registered 339 horsepower and 427 lb-ft of torque at the wheels. This clearly means the engine is considerably stronger than its official “at the crank” ratings. Moreover, It also means it’s packing more torque than the Mustang’s V-8. For which the further rating is at 429 lb-ft before any power is lost turning its transmission and rear axle. And that shove hits down low, at just 1600 rpm, which explodes the Supra off the line and out of tight corners. Moreover, the straight-six redlines at 6500 rpm but pulls strongly to its 7000-rpm fuel cut off, and it’s quick-shifting eight-speed may hold gears in manual mode.

The Inside View

It is therefore easy to make a Shelby GT350 invisible. Just park it next to a 2020 Toyota Supra. Onlookers walk right past the Shelby like its beige Camry and may ask if they could take a picture of the Toyota. Especially folks are younger than 40. It isn’t exactly beautiful, and parts just look wrong from some angles, but there’s no denying the dramatic draw of the Supra’s shape.

Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

From inside, its tachometer is in alignment with its redline at 12 o’clock. Aside from its gauges, the Toyota’s cabin is alike BMW, with modern design and further impeccable construction. Furthermore, it also appears tight and has mail-slot sightlines. However, the Supra’s cabin lives up to its steep price point, just similar to the rest of the machine.

Taking into consideration the Mustang’s interior is pleasingly spacious. Moreover, it’s also a bit retro with large round dials and a levered parking brake. However, it couldn’t be way simpler. Pedal spacing is perfect, and its firm brake pedal is reassuring.

The Bottom Line

Having a small back seat and larger trunk, the Mustang is surely more practical of these two factory hot rods. However, the more refined Toyota is even more comfortable for daily use. Further, it rides better than the Ford, it’s even quieter on the highway, and its seats aren’t as aggressively supported. Although when you’re tossing they get a bit squishy from corner to corner. Toyota’s buckets are moreover preferably cushy, especially for weekend road trips. The Supra has a better fuel economy than the Shelby, and its highway cruising range is far superior.

Toyota GR Supra vs Ford Mustang Shelby GT350

As impressed as we are with the fifth-generation supra, it’s the old school, three-pedal Mustang, and V-8 thunder, both literally and figuratively. Above all, Driving to and fro, the Ford is thus simply too engaging to not win this shootout. But ideally, it wins.
