What Is Shift Lock Release?

What Is Shift Lock Release?: As we know the fact about car transmission, there is 2 kind of transmissions – manual and automatic. Those cars which run on manual transmission (MT) also have a clutch which the driver needs to push each time to shift the gear. The number of gears depends on the size of the engine. A manual transmission vehicle, however, doesn’t have the shift lock release mechanism.

The automatic transmission has it. It is, nevertheless, quite different from a manual transmission. This is why people who are used to either kind of transmission find it tough to drive a car with another transmission.

What Is Shift Lock Release?

Shift Lock Button

The shift lock button is a safety developed by the automotive engineer after various episodes of driver carelessness. Few events usually happen with the car owner without shift lock functionality, for example:

  • Driver confusion because the car swiftly does not turn on, while the car is turned off in both D or R. The automatic car engine can barely be turned on in the N or P position.
  • The driver assumed the vehicle to turn off in P, but really in N. When it is turned on, the gear remains to pull down to R, as it wants to pull back, but the car is truly in D and moving ahead. The occurrence happened.

So, the shift lock is designated to discuss the earlier occurrences including security concerns. The majority of the cars now necessity be turned off in P before the lock can be removed. The shift lock works to release your transmission from P. This is because in several circumstances you have to put the gear in N, for example, your car needs to be pulled due to a dead battery. This is where the shift lock is needed.

Let us know about Shift Lock Release

This mechanism of shift lock and its release is available in cars with automatic transmission because the functionality of both is pretty much opposed. Here, there is no want to shift the gears manually. This gear shift, however, is applied for switching among choices like reverse, parking, neutral, etc. to shift between these selections, you have these options.

You can usually place it on the lever itself. It is actually a button. It supports you to switch to an option, say parking, and then lets you lock it till you switch into another one. Then, unless you release the shift lock, you will not be able to do the shift lock override.

How to Use Shift Lock Release?

As we know it is a button, a shift lock release button particularly, all you need to do is press it. When you push the button, it will cause the lock to release, thus allowing you to shift the lever to the desired option.

As you release the lock, the lever will move as you want. Now all you need to do is select the option that you need to place the transmission in and then press the button again. Pushing the button again will let you lock the lever on that setting.

Also, it is a security function that helps you move your vehicle when the gear shift won’t move from one setting to another.

Follow these simple steps to use, when the gear selector is not working:

  1. Firstly, put on the parking brake.
  2. Now, pull the key out of the ignition.
  3. Take a flat-head screwdriver. Try to bring the cap off of the gear shift lock cover.
  4. Once you have removed the cover, insert the key into this slot.
  5. Now press the key down gently. Simultaneously, pull on the button located at the front of the gearshift.
  6. Pull the key out.
  7. Replace the cover like it was before.
  8. Insert the key back into the ignition and press the brake pedal.
  9. Now, simply crank the engine.

The perfect way to use this shift lock release is always mentioned in your owner’s manual of your car. For those who are not familiar with automatic transmission, this mechanism may seem superfluous at first. But those who know how to drive an automatic car know that it is very much important from the safety point of view.

In a manual transmission, since the driver has all the control in his hands. A mechanism like this is never a necessity. However, in a vehicle where the control is in the vehicle’s hand, this is indeed a necessity.

Causes of locked shift locks:

The most common condition is the brake/shift interlock, discussed in the next section. Another cause is too much force employed by the park gear. So, parking on an approach may cause our shifter to stick in the park position. If we release our brakes, after we shift into park position, the vehicle may roll.
